I'd also like to point out that some "peaceful" folks at DU are actually advocating violence towards PW's and anyone else they don't agree with. NEW YORK (AP) - Relations between Republican National Convention protesters and the thousands of New York City officers assigned to police them turned ugly Monday when a march from the United Nations to Madison Square Garden ended with a violent confrontation.

A protester attacked and seriously injured a plainclothes detective, according to police and witnesses. Hundreds of police in riot gear swarmed the area, pushing protesters away from the Garden and into nearby side streets. Four other police officers suffered minor injuries during the scuffle.

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly called it "a blatant, vicious attack."

The plainclothes detective who was attacked, William Sample, was hospitalized Tuesday with serious facial trauma, but his injuries were not life threatening, police said. His assailant was being sought by police.

The protest began when a crowd of several thousand outside U.N. headquarters negotiated with police to march to Madison Square Garden despite not having a permit.

"They asked if they could march, and we said yes," police Assistant Deputy Commissioner Tom Doepfner said. "We try to be nice."

A wall of uniformed police on motor scooters blocked off half of Second Avenue as marchers trooped down city streets. Police steered the restless, unwieldy crowd through midtown Manhattan rush-hour traffic as cars backed up 10 blocks in places.

The march ended at the protest area south of the Garden. Witnesses said the confrontation began as police tried to use interlocking metal fences to contain the thousands of protesters. Some protesters began to push against the fences, witnesses said.

GOP 2004: Moore Won't Return to Madison Square Garden

NEW YORK Following all the commotion last night, Michael Moore will not be returning to Madison Square Garden for the Republican National Convention, E&P has learned. According to editors at USA Today, which is publishing his daily column this week, Moore told them that he was choosing not to return again.

However, they said he would continue to write his daily column and they stressed that in no way did they second-guess their decision to have him write the commentary.

Last month, Ann Coulter, who had been hired by USA Today to write a column at the Democratic National Convention, quit after the editors requested many changes in her first submission.

After entering the Garden Monday night with USA Today credentials, Moore was criticized by Sen. John McCain in his speech, setting off prolonged boos and taunts in the arena.

"We had hoped we would be able to put Moore in place where he could actually listen to speeches and not disrupt anything," Ken Paulson, USA Today editor, told E&P today. "The idea was not to put him in the line of sight while giving him the opportunity to observe. Now Moore doesn't plan to return to the convention. I think he saw the down side of his attending. We will have the four days of his column and I hope people will take time to read what he wrote.
